Mr. Mann: Expression Sheet
Let's try something different
Introduction
It’s been a little while since I’ve worked on an expression sheet1 and if you read those posts you’ll know that I wasn’t happy with how the Girl or Mr. Bindle turned out. They felt stiff to me and I think the reason for that was I kept the head positions in a 3/4 shot with no tilts or anything to denote emotion. So for this expressions sheet, I’m going to try and be more expressive with the head placement to see if that can help my feelings toward the stiffer expression sheets that I’ve been seeing.
I started by looking through my Pinterest cache of expression images and found a image set that I felt really exemplified the drama that is Mr. Mann2. I still didn’t want overly exaggerated expressions, but I settled for something in the middle so that his dramatic energy could be felt more clearly.
Then I decided to do each expression loosely just trying to get the feel for each expression. I cleaned up each image and finally inked and colored each of the images.
In the end, I feel like these expressions came out much better and I was a lot happier with the final results. The only one I was just alright with was sad I think it could be more dramatic but he won’t be sad in his scenes so this will do.
Because this method was more to my liking I will be doing this method from now on and behind the scenes I may even redo the Girls and Mr. Bindle’s expression sheet3 using this format.

I didn’t need to create one for Sergio because he only has one expression pensive disinterest.
I did this for the Girl and Mr. Bindle as well. However, I searched around for different expressions that were from varying sources. In this case, it was a sheet with a single individual doing varied expressions. Thinking about it I am still convinced that it was the stiff head positions that was the problem with my previous designs and not so much the reference material.
If I decide to do that I will make sure to update their individual posts and put those images there updating you all on the changes in Notes.
