The short answer to this question is pre-production! So today I want to share with you all what I will be working on first and then give you my checklist for pre-production on my debut graphic novel Mr. Bindle.
For this graphic novel I will be designing a total of 31 characters! Each of them will be given a time lapse showing me at work on each of the different sections below. And each of the characters will receive a blog post describing my thoughts on each of them. You will be able to see and read these for free in The Art of Mr. Bindle section of my substack.
The First post will be designing the main character of Mr. Bindle named “The Girl.”
And now for my pre-production pipeline for this project:
Each character will get their own concept art piece where it will be the character in a pose that represents them as a character.
Character breakdown (Simpler form of the character). And their individual color keys.
Character Turnarounds
T-Pose
Straight ahead
3/4 view front
Profile
3/4 view back
Back view
Expression sheet with basic emotions. (In order to make more complex emotions you just need to mix the basic six.)
Happiness
Sadness
Disgust
Fear
Surprise
Excitement
Props, & clothing changes.
Environmental concept images.
Character height comparison chart (will not have a video but will have a post.)
Once this is completed I should have received all edits from my editors and then I can begin the final stages of pre-production.
Storyboarding
Color scripting
And that’s the plan for now! If you work on comics or graphic novels, I would love to know your pre-production process in the comments below!
